The Flexi-T models of Intra-Uterine Devices are designed to suit women in different situations, at various life stages, and with differing requirements.
Flexi-T works in two ways. First, the traces of copper released locally by the IUD cause the sperm to lose their motility, thereby preventing fertilization. In addition, should an egg become fertilized, Flexi-T prevents it from implanting in the lining of the womb. This means the IUD is also perfectly suited for use as a morning after contraception. This double action starts as soon as the Flexi-T has been fitted. For women in long-term monogamous relationships IUDs offer an excellent contraceptive option. All Flexi-T IUDs are effective for 5 years.
Health Care Professionals please consult the bottom section of this page for insertion instructions and further information on the safety and efficacy of the Flexi-T copper IUD.
The Flexi-T copper IUDs are available for purchase at pharmacies across Canada.
The standard model offers effectiveness and comfort. Ideally suited for the nuliparous woman (women who have never been pregnant, have possibly had one child, or a caesarean section). It has a copper surface area of 300mm².
Developed for contraception in multiparous women (women with two or more pregnancies). The body of this model of IUD is slightly bigger than the Flexi-T 300. It has a copper surface area of 300mm².
Developed for contraception in multiparous women. The body of this model of IUD is the same size as the Flexi-T +300, however has a copper surface of 380mm².
If the IUD is properly positioned, neither partner should notice it during intercourse.
Sometimes the IUD can be rejected by the body, but this is very rare with Flexi-T. The woman friendly shape means that Flexi-T is almost always accepted by the body.
The copper is not harmful to your health. The small amount of copper released by the IUD is far less than the amount you take in from tap water or food each day.
All Flexi-T models are effective continuously 5 years from the insertion date.
You can become pregnant immediately after its removal.
Flexi-T does not affect the hormonal balance, so your normal cycle will not change and menstruation will follow its normal pattern. Blood loss increases slightly in some women and menstruation may last one or two days longer.
